Trafikverket has procured Link V2X from Digitraffic to explore the potential of 5G-Based Traffic information

Trafikverket (Swedish transport administration) has chosen Digitraffic Infrastruktur AB’s product Link V2X as a key component in a research project in collaboration with Telia and AstaZero. The project aims to evaluate how the 5G network can enhance the delivery of traffic information to road users – both via connected Variable Message Signs (VMS) and directly to vehicles using V2X technology.

Rättvik, February 17, 2025 – Digitraffic Infrastruktur AB is proud to announce that Trafikverket (Swedish transport administration) has procured Link V2X as part of the exploration of next-generation traffic information systems within the Widgets project. In collaboration with Telia, and AstaZero, the project will assess how 5G technology and V2X communication can be used to improve real-time information exchange between road users and traffic management systems.

The goal is to explore traffic information services in rural areas enabled by 5G connectivity. This will be done with both the use of Variable Message Signs (VMS) and direct communication to V2X connected vehicles. By leveraging the low latency and high capacity of the 5G network, real-time data on accidents, congestion, and road conditions and adaptive traffic rules can be shared, contributing to a safer and more efficient traffic environment.

This project is an important step toward modernizing Sweden’s traffic information infrastructure. With Link V2X and 5G, Trafikverket can both monitor traffic and distribute traffic information in more remote areas in the Swedish extended road network, ultimately improving both traffic safety and road network effiency, says Björn Selander, CEO of Digitraffic Infrastruktur AB.

AstaZero, a world-leading test facility for future vehicles in Gothenburg, will serve as a key location for testing and evaluating the technology under real-world traffic conditions. The collaboration with Telia ensures a robust and reliable 5G infrastructure, enabling analysis of how mobile networks can support the future of connected transportation systems.

Link V2X enables us to test how 5G and V2X communication can improve real-time traffic information and road safety. This collaboration with Trafikverket, Telia, and Digitraffic is a key step toward advancing connected and automated mobility – Victor Jarlow, Project Leader at AstaZero.

Link V2X will be used both in AstaZero’s test environments and within Trafikverket’s IT systems to enable V2X communication. Trafikverket’s investment in Link V2X highlights the technology’s potential to enhance information flow within the transport sector, creating a more connected and responsive traffic ecosystem.
